Dr. Hanchard is a Tenured Senior Investigator in the National Human Genome Research Insitute at the National Institues of Heatlh, where he heads the Childhood Complex Disease Genomics Section. He is also a Board Certified Pediatrician and Medical Geneticist. Dr. Hanchard leads efforts to use genomic and genetic tools to understand complex pediatric diseases and traits in diverse populations. His studies focus on applying human quantitative and population genetics to understand diseases, including sickle cell disease, severe childhood malnutrition, pediatric HIV in Africa and childhood-onset essential hypertension. Dr. Hanchard's program aims to define and catalog the relevant genes, variants, and biological pathways uderlying these diseases, with the ultimate promise of helping researchers develop practical therapeutic strategies.
