Expanding Horizons of Quantitative Clinical Pharmacology Globally: What to Expect and Get Ready for Next Decade?

Session Description

Clinical Pharmacology discipline has evolved over time and continues to expand its horizon. From traditional clinical pharmacology, it has expanded to include various facets to inform drug development including translational pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, proteomics, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling, quantitative structural pharmacology, physiology based pharmacokinetic modeling, model-based meta-analysis etc. In last couple of decades, these specialized foci have become integral in most of the development decisions. Therefore, an early career clinical pharmacologist is expected to have specialized knowledge of one or more of these fields in addition to the foundational knowledge of clinical pharmacology.

Recent developments including real world evidence, artificial intelligence and machine learning has started to feature in various clinical pharmacology related drug development decision making. Automations are being implemented to expedite the analyses to decrease the resource requirement and drug development timelines. Of late, the capabilities demonstrated by generative AI such as ChatGPT has caused a lot of excitement and it is only a matter of time that the use of such AI technology will change the way clinical pharmacologists work today. New modalities such as gene and cell therapies, complex biologics, RNA therapeutics and vaccines etc requires different approaches than the ones traditionally used for the development of small molecules or monoclonal antibodies. These changes bring a question for early career clinical pharmacologists and students, “how these technologies/modalities are going to change the job requirements in next decade and how to prepare or adapt to these changes?”. For the clinical pharmacologists from developing countries, where the specialized foci are still emerging, these changes may bring additional challenges and opportunities.

This session will aim to outline the potential changes in next decade from a global perspective (including developing countries) and provide guidance to next generation of clinical pharmacologists.

1. Identify challenges and opportunities with emerging technologies and modalities that will drive advancements in quantitative clinical pharmacology in the next decade globally.
2. Lead development of multi-disciplinary collaborative plan for next generation of clinical pharmacologists
3. Learn the challenges and opportunities due the implementation of these technologies globally with unique considerations for developing countries.
